In Year 1 we expect the children to read very regularly at home - at least 4 times a week. The children have their reading diaries checked on a Friday and receive a reading certificate if they have read at least 4 times in the week. Diaries need to be signed by the parent.
Reading in Year 1 is extremely important, as the more reading a child does at home, the bigger the benefit within school.
The children are given spellings to learn each Friday and then have a spelling test on the following Friday. The spellings are linked to the phonics that has been taught during the week. At the back of the child's reading diary the score is written, so that parents are able to check that the children are learning the spellings thoroughly and are able to apply them.
Children will be given a piece of maths homework to complete each week, which follows on from their learning in school.
