In Year 1 we expect the children to read regularly at home, every night if possible, but at least 4 times a week. The children have their reading diaries checked on a Friday and diaries need to be signed by the parent and a comment made if possible. Home reading is recorded on a class reading display to celebrate the importance of reading at home.
Reading in Year 1 is extremely important, as the more reading a child does at home, the greater the benefit to your child's progress within school.
The children are given spellings to learn and sentences to write to help them to practise the spelling each Friday. They will have a spelling test on the following Friday. The spellings are linked to the phonics that has been taught during the week. At the back of the child's reading diary the score is written, so that parents are able to check that the children are learning the spellings thoroughly and are able to apply them.
Children will be given a piece of maths homework to complete each week, which follows on from their learning in school.
